Central MA Chapter of Trout Unlimited – February Newsletter

We would like to thank Tom Foley for his presentation on fly fishing history and fly fishing books. The meeting had a great turnout and we appreciate all the new faces that showed up. We hope you continue to join us and look forward to seeing more members in the future.

February Chapter Meeting –

Date: Thursday, February 12th

Time: 6pm to 8pm

Location: Auburn Sportsman’s Club
50 Elm St, Auburn, MA 01501

Going forward we are planning to alternate between presentations and fly tying. For the February meeting Dave Fox will be leading fly tying where we will be learning how to tie the Hornberg. We welcome you to join us, we have materials and extra equipment.

The Hornberg can be fished as a dry fly dead drift or fished as a streamer below the surface of the water. Alternately, a combination approach can be employed. It can be cast out upstream and drifted until the fly swings below and dangles. Then the fly can be pulled under the surface and stripped in as a streamer. Fished as a dry fly the Hornberg is suggested to represent a caddis or stonefly. When stripped subsurface it is intended to represent a baitfish.

In March, Adam Kautza, Coldwater Fisheries Project Leader, will give a presentation on:

  • MA native brook trout and where they’re located
  • The state’s plan for the Quinapoxet and how CMTU can assist

Bill Doyle will provide a presentation on Tenkara fishing at our May 14th meeting

Here are the plans for future coming meetings, all happening the 2nd Thursday of each month.

February 12 – Fly tying (Hornberg)
March 12 – Adam Kautza
April 9 – Fly tying
May 14 – Tenkara fishing presentation
June – August No meeting
September – Meetings start again

We look forward to seeing you.
