December 2017 Newsletter - Central MA Chapter of Trout Unlimited

Our meeting dates are the first Monday of the month. This fall on New Year’s Day (Jan 1). We will not have a meeting on this date. Our next meeting will be in February (Feb 5, 2018).

January 1st - Annual New Year’s Day Fly Fish on the Swift

However, we do have an opportunity for you and anyone else that is ready to brave a potentially cold New Year’s day for some great fishing on the Swift River. This is an annual event, and there are usually an abundance of trout ready to make your efforts for Winter Fishing - well worth the effort in the low Mercury.

Start the year out right with a nice big rainbow from the "Y" pool.

Date: Monday, January 1st

Time: 9:00 AM until too many fish or too cold

Location: Swift River

We will meet at the rt 9 parking lot and then make our way up to the "Y" pool. Coffee and Donuts will be served until we run-out or get our gear on and head out fishing.

April 28 The 2018 High School State Fly Fishing Championship is gaining momentum. We are scheduling a special meeting over the School Winter break to continue our planning activities for this event. Here are a few of the items that are part of our planning process and under consideration for this year’s event:

  1. The 2017 banner was designed for multiple year use. We will use last year’s banner and update with the current information.
  2. We are looking to get more girls involved this year. Last year we had a strong showing for the boys. This year we hope to get some girls involved - we know they are out there!
  3. I've been asked for an article on last year's event. We have some good pictures. Need this for the Council.
  4. The Marlboro Show is coming. We will have our banner, sign-up sheet and handouts available for all 3 days.
  5. Bears Den Show - Possible?
  6. Expand to include an Open fish in the pond with instructions, flies (with weed guards to prevent getting hooked), fly tying and Bob's Bug Bucket (This is always a lot of fun getting muck from a local stream and seeing what crawls out).
  7. MA Fish and Game. I have names (and they know Eamonn!). Looking to set up ether Feb or Mar for a presentation by their group. Focus will be on Youth events. This could lead to a strong support, heavy stocking and other benefits.

If you would like to get involved, send an email to: centralmasstu@gmail.com.

Also, if you know any High School students who may be interested, have them send an email or look for our booth at the Marlboro Fly Fishing Show.

The 2018 Annual Banquet

SAVE THIS DATE: April 21, 2018

NOTICE: We have a Five Star menu planned for what is going to be an event of a life time!

I do not know how our Banquet team found these culinary artists, but they did – and you are going to be the benefactor.

In the December meeting, a list of the most delicious entrees were reviewed by the team. Details of each item were reviewed, and the taste buds were rejoicing. The actual menu will be completed and provided in the February Newsletter – and I assure you, this will be a multi trip to the buffet, move the buckle over one hole and have a meal of a life time. And that is just the food.

We will have some excellent prizes for the lucky winners to take home. We already are putting together an impressive Treasure Chest of items.

2018 is starting out with a bang – at the Swift. We have that backed up with some exciting events for the rest of the year. We understand if the New Year’s Day Swift event cannot be added to your calendar, but hope to see you in February.

Tight (frozen) lines,

Peter Sterndale
