February Meeting

The Raffle:

This month, as you feast on some of the best pizza that Central MA has to offer, we will have a Raffle that will include over $300 in prizes! There is rumor that more than a few of you were on Santa’s "Naughty" list. Well, we look beyond those shortcomings because most of you practice "Catch and Release". If for no other reason, come on down and try your luck and see if you can replace that large lump of coal with something more "Fisherman/woman" friendly. Featured in this month’s raffle will be:

  1. A complete fly rod package featuring
    1. Redington 9’ 5 wt fly rod
    2. Cortland 5 wt fly line
    3. An Orvis fly reel and backing
  2. A ticket to the Central MA Banquet
  3. A Goody from the Farmington River Grab Bag

The focus of the meeting:

The 2018 High School Fly Fishing Championship

We are getting some very good interest in this event. So far we have:

  1. Reserved the Trout Brook Recreation Facility
  2. Updated the Banner with this year’s details
  3. Presented the event to the Sunday (Not so) crowd at the Marlboro Show
  4. Created an article with a summary of our 2017 event with pictures and sent to:
    1. The Council’s distribution
    2. The MA Fish and Game
    3. Cheeky Reel
    4. TU Councils in CT, VT, NH and ME
    5. Trout Magazine

From these actions, we got a Bite!

Trout Magazine requested a 300 to 500 word article with some pictures. They have a growing interest on Youth and they believe this is Just the right kind of stuff. This has the potential to be in your next issue of Trout Magazine. This is very exciting and will certainly spread this youth event throughout Massachusetts and well beyond!

We have a few of our high schoolers putting together the article and selecting just the right pictures to supplement the words. Our plan is to have this into Trout Magazine well before the Feb 5 deadline. The kids are under pressure and they are enjoying it.

Along with putting together the article, we want to put many of the details of the event onto paper and put them into a plan to provide the kids with a wonderful event. We are looking for those in attendance last year to bring their pros and cons of the 2017 event. To this, we hope to add some new ideas based on other events/activities that we’ve been involved with. Our goal is to have a project plan for success by the end of the meeting. We do not see much "Heavy Lifting" but do understand the Devil is in the Details.

There will be a special focus on communication. The kids will cover Facebook. However, we want to make sure we take full advantage of the old standards. I am talking Newspaper, Hanging Posters and emailing high schools.

The weather is getting warmer. Time to tie up those last few flies you will need, fix those holes in the waders and replace that 3 year old 5X tippet material that now has the breaking strength 8X!
