October Chapter Meeting –
Date: Monday, October 7th
Time: 6pm to 8pm
Location: Auburn Sportsman’s Club
50 Elm St, Auburn, MA 01501
Hello Cold Water Fisheries Advocates,
Time to start up the Fall meeting schedule, share some stories of fun on the water and fill some of those holes in the fly box made by donations at the stream.
The October meeting will be held at the Auburn Sportsman’s Club.
Dave Fox will lead us with some excellent instruction on the vice. Bring your own equipment, but we also have some vises and tools if this is your first time. We are very interested in patterns that are working for you that you would like to share or those patterns that you just need a little pointer or two to improve the final fly and increase the chances of a take!
Future patterns will include tying flies on jig hooks. I started this in the spring to avoid some of the many snags on the bottom of the stream. These sticks, rods, etc, love my flies and have a big appetite. The jig hook orients the hook point on the top and helps avoid some of those traps.
But there is another benefit with the jig hook. The hook set is typically in the top jaw of the trout. This makes a big difference and can make the difference on those really big fish that show up every once in a while.
And you are going to need those jig hook flies!
The Quinnie dam project will be a big focus this year. We will be discussing progress on the dam removal on the Quinie at our meetings. The mussel removal was a big success and now the project moves to the next phase. This project is significant in so many ways, but from a trout perspective, there will be some big fish making their way upstream! Next Fall, you may need to rethink that 5X tippet and those jig flies will help.
Pizza will be served!
Hope to see you Oct 7.
Tight Lines,
Peter Sterndale
