We had a perfect sunny day for our 2nd annual State High School Fly Fishing event. We had a great turnout of both High School Students, parents and volunteers.
We all met at the Trout Brook Recreation facility in Holden. We put our signs up, laid out the casting area and put the donuts and brownies out for the youngsters. In all, we had 14 high schoolers, with 4 of them girls!
After we went through a few dozen donuts and a pan of Brownies, the kids were able to get their rods rigged and ready to start the fun. First up was the fly casting.
We had three kids in a tie at 64 feet. We later had a cast off – and the winner came in a few inches over 80 feet. Nicely done.
While we were making the last few casts, Joan was busy cooking the dogs for the hungry kids. The combination of a hungry kids, great cooking and the thought of an afternoon on the Quinie made the dogs fly off the grill. We fed kids then went off to try their luck with the trout.
And we did have luck. The kids had very good luck getting bites on “Weenie Greenies” and Pink “San Juan” worms. There were some good battles, but in the end, we found our top 3 competitors.
The kids are already looking forward to 2019.
